Cullen Watanuki is a four-year DECA member from Arlington Heights, IL, with a strong passion for leadership and service. Throughout high school, Cullen has served as Illinois’s Vice President of Leadership Development and his chapter co-president. In these roles, he has worked to expand opportunities for members, foster collaboration, and drive innovation within every member. As your next Central Region Vice President, Cullen aims to strengthen connections between all the Central Region associations, ensuring that every member's voice is heard. In Cullen’s current state officer role, he has created Leadership Councils to mentor members across Illinois, oversaw Illinois’ membership surpassing 5,400 members, and created the first-ever Rising Leader team where members can work simultaneously with the state officers to achieve the goals of Illinois DECA. Outside of DECA, Cullen is a committed Varsity athlete and captain of his swim team, an active member on his school district advisory board, coaching his childhood swim team, and as a peer tutor. Cullen is beyond excited to help the Central Region soar to new heights!
While I may have entered high school with a bit of “DECA nepotism” I knew I wanted to be part of the incredible organization so many of us call home. Growing up, my dad was a DECA advisor. Going to ICDC as a little kid, I saw the best of the best —leaders who inspired the stage, mentoring those around them, and embraced the energy of competition. I knew I wanted to be like them.
Since my first role-play, DECA has continually impacted me. It has inspired me to be a better thinker, be more confident, and develop leadership skills outside of competitions. As Co-President of Hersey DECA, I focused on involving members, hearing their suggestions, and preparing them for success. As Illinois DECA’s Vice President for Leadership Development, I took that mission state-wide, starting Leadership Councils, growing membership to over 5,000, and creating the Rising Leader Team to empower emerging leaders.
But, I knew I couldn’t stop there. Running for Central Region Vice President is about ensuring every member is being heard, is being valued, and is being equipped to perform at their best. I plan to build upon relationships between associations, foster collaboration, and maximize opportunities for all. DECA has given me much—it is time for me to give back to the organization so many of us call home. At the end of the day, the sky’s the limit and I can’t wait to help all members soar to the sky.
